Artist Statement
Inspiration happens. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's work inspires me. His marks of paint look drawn; he was drawing with paint.
At first it felt more comfortable to work in ink or with a stick of charcoal. When I discovered the work of Toulouse-Lautrec, eagerly I looked for more. His paintings, prints, and drawings fascinated me. I ventured more into brushes and paint. His marks demonstrate that drawing and painting become inseparable, they're one in the same. Similarly the works of the Fauves: Derain, Vlaminck, …and of course, Matisse, impress upon me that one can draw with paint, and paint a drawing. I first saw these artists' works firsthand in "The Fauves" exhibition in the mid-seventies shown at Kimble Museum of Art. Their paint and color were intense, so expressively drawn!
Drawing, painting, and color marks must work together, act themselves out in some sort of physical attitude. Even surface must compliment and lend itself to that act. Few painters compare to Van Gogh for that physicality and force of paint upon the canvas surface! His lively marks and color are irresistible to touch with your mind's eye!
Fine arts painter, illustrator, and teacher. Born in West Texas, grew up in Colorado City and Abilene, grew more as an artist in Houston, and still growing as an artist!
Early art instruction came from artist and teachers, Dr. Brent Green, Ted Rose, Dr. Art Williams and Jeff Tabor at Abilene Christian University. Particularly Ted Rose and Dr. Brent Green nurtured my passion to draw with charcoal and paint with vivid color.
Painting with an honesty for an artistic expression started in Houston at the University of Houston. Internationally-known artists and teachers, Gail Stack and Ed Hill opened up my artistic sensibility, encouraging me to seek a personal vision, paint with a greater honesty for what truly inspires me. Not to paint what others expect but for what I expect of myself. I must look more closely at what’s around me, everyday. Visual arts are best learned from seeing, not what from is written about it. And then paint and draw, and then do it some more. The works of Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, and many Expressionist artists still show me something new visually with every look.
Chief among all passions in my life is a faith in Christ, and then in my best friend, wife and artist, Patty Rae. My hope is to be keen observer of life around me and paint, ...and draw more.
Favorite artists besides my wife are Rembrandt, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Matisse, Dubuffet, German Expressionists, Abstract Expressionists and Post Expressionists. My favorites scatter throughout art history, and the list keeps growing with time.
